Creating Meaningful Land Acknowledgements: How does ChatGPT fit in?
Goals
This lesson will address cross-curricular content of both tech design and social studies.
- Students will critically analyze the AI technology ChatGPT and its ability to create personalized statements like land acknowledgements.
- Students will create an authentic land acknowledgement that is descriptive and specific to their experience with the land they have lived on.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to…
- Produce a land acknowledgement of their own using their choice of multi-media methods
- Take a screenshot of a question asked in ChatGPT pertaining to land acknowledgements and analyze the viability of it.
- Better understand the uses for ChatGPT and other AI technology and the associated pros and cons
- Understand the importance of including a meaningful and relevant land acknowledgements
Prior Knowledge & Learner Profile
Students will have had some preliminary exploration on one or more AI technology. Students will have some prior knowledge about different AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Perplexty, CoPilot). This lesson will be geared to grades 6-8. They will have worked on a controlled inquiry project in social studies that explored a significant place in nature to them. A requirement of this inquiry is to have students research whose traditional territory it is and provide some details about their chosen place. They have not yet explored the importance of meaninful land acknowledgements. This will be the hook of the lesson as it introduces similar weak points of AI generation tech and the tokenized land acknowledgement. Students will learn how to critically analyze the efficacy of both simple land acknowledgements and of generative AI technology.
Evaluation
Formative Assessment: Observation of student’s participation in discussion on what is a meaningful land acknowledgement, their willingness to engage and explore AI Technology by asking multiple questions to get as specific as possible.
Summative Assessment: Proficiency scale for assessing their finished land acknowlegdment projects.
Topics for assessment include: appropriate use of media, story-telling elements utilized, how clear was the meaning behind their acknowledgement.
